Can i bury asbestos in my garden

If you are not comfortable with doing the work yourself and unsure of the appropriate safe work procedures, it is recommended that you use a licensed asbestos removalist. The danger from asbestos arises if elevated levels of dust are generated and this dust is breathed in.

So when cleaning up pieces of fibro keep the material damp but not flooded with water; and minimise further break-up of the fibro sheets or activities that cause dust to be liberated. If practical, once you have removed the visible fibro sheets and fragments, you should gently rake wetted soil to 10cm depth to expose fibro fragments. All visible pieces of fibro should be removed by hand-picking and securing in a sealed bag. Never use power tools or saws on asbestos materials.

No visible fibro fragments should be present on the surface top 10 centimetres when you have finished. Other asbestos products, that tend to be found in the home, include insulation board, asbestolux plasterboard, and insulation surrounding warm air heating systems.

These products present more risk to health due to the location in which they are found and the type of asbestos involved. Please be aware that there is a charge for this service, which depends on the amount of asbestos you need to dispose of. We cannot provide a price to you over the phone, but you can refer to our chargeable waste prices for guidance.

Before bringing asbestos to Hazel Court HWRC please contact us so we can check that there is space available at the site for you. There is only one secure asbestos container at Hazel Court and space is not always available. If you are unable to transport the asbestos to Hazel Court, then you can use our collection service for bonded asbestos. This facility is only for householders only - we cannot accept asbestos from traders and businesses because our waste management licence does not permit this.

Any business that tries to use Hazel Court to dispose of asbestos will be turned away from the site and may also be committing a criminal offence. Separate advice on the disposal of asbestos by commercial operators can be obtained from the Environment Agency. In fact, if the asbestos can be adequately contained underground, the risk to human health is almost entirely diminished.

There are a number of causes for asbestos making its way into nearby soil. Run-off from poorly made composite-products like roof tiles is a common culprit. When these materials decompose, the fibres are able to escape, and can be swept away with water passing over the damaged areas. This can also result from using high-powered cleaning equipment like water blasters on otherwise-uncompromised material; the pressure can be enough to loosen some fibres.

Uncontrolled dumping or mismanaged deconstruction is another. Structures that contain asbestos are sometimes destroyed without knowledge that asbestos is present - other times the knowledge is there but the people in charge choose to skirt the law and dump the material without following proper procedure.

Together, these situations have resulted in areas of the country displaying high concentration of asbestos in the nearby soil. Given the fact that asbestos itself is between 10 and 30 times thinner than a human hair, the ability to spot it in its raw form is almost impossible.

Nonetheless, there are often clues as to whether the area might be contaminated with asbestos. Read on to find out how to proceed. If you have even just a small inkling that you have found asbestos in your garden, your first and only action should be to call the professionals, so that asbestos surveys can be carried out.
