Why is going green so expensive

Are consumers willing to pay more for these? And how can we encourage people to make good choices? Read more: Green is the new black: why retailers want you to know about their green credentials. But research continues to show few consumers who report positive attitudes toward eco-friendly products actually follow through with their wallets. Climate-friendly defines products that reduce damage specifically to the climate. All these terms are used in labelling to make us feel good if we buy products claimed to minimise harm to the planet and the environment.

Some brands are even moving beyond simply eco-friendly and now seek to claim their products are climate-neutral. On Earth Day , the organisation Climate Neutral — an independent non-profit organisation working to decrease global carbon emissions — confirmed brands had completed its certification process in and 50 other brands were still in the process. This is especially the case in a country with high humidity and a great chance of raining or snowing all the time — no one wants their packages wet!

The same is true for wet markets, which is why many people resorted to eco bags and even bring their containers. However, not all wet markets around the world have people who have the luxury to have containers for their fish. At most, the containers will still contain amounts of plastic because using paper is just usually messy, while stainless steel containers, although they are the best solution, are very costly.

One example is the metal straw. Not all communities around the world are well-oriented yet about the positive effects of patronizing eco-friendly products due to a lack of campaign by the government and other organizations. As mentioned above, organic produce not only takes effort but also time. Anything organic requires a lot more time. Aside from fruits and vegetables, livestock is also part of the equation.

If the pasture grass is not affected by fertilizers then the products that will come from the cows and goats will be truly organic. This also takes a longer time to achieve versus non-organic farming.

While it is true that green products today are considerably pricier, there are ways that we can reduce their prices in the future. Companies and organizations should have better campaigns and information dissemination on the benefits of going green. Many malls, supermarkets, and groceries around the world have resorted to eco bags and sustainable packaging, which is a good start. So many of my decisions are made by time.

I drive 10 minutes to the small Aldi. But when I was laid off from my full-time job in March, I swore I would primarily shop there, or a similarly priced store. Often, I shop at the health food store. My son and I can walk there, and usually do. Just a few months ago, another, much bigger health and organic food store opened, which is even closer to our house.

It looks like a mini Whole Foods and is priced as such. I bring my own reusable bags to Aldi, which is a requirement and it helps — if you have to buy or bring shopping bags every time, you will remember to bring them. And I use another of my own bags at Kroger. After unpacking groceries, I return the bags to my car and keep them there.

My son and I live alone in an old house, over a hundred years old, which I rent. In the winter, I seal the windows to keep in heat, and seal the drafty kitchen door, closing it off for the season.

I change the furnace filter regularly and have blackout drapes on many of the windows, which can help keep the house warm or cool. But in the summer, like in many old houses, the downstairs is OK and the upstairs sweltering, too hot to sleep.

I have two window air-conditioning units, given to me used. I feel terrible about running them, but am forced to sometimes to escape the high humidity, and plus degree heat we have had this spring and summer. One of my neighbors has a fantastic, almost full-roof display of solar panels, but she owns her home.

I can see her panels glinting in the sun from my porch. For me, having a dishwasher would be a marker of success. I have thought about purchasing a standalone dishwasher, but our older kitchen is extremely small. So, even though I have read a dishwasher can actually use less water , I have to wash dishes by hand. I wash all of our clothes in cold water in the washing machine. That spells trouble in the long term, even in a world where most people are environmentally conscious.

Shoppers do care about the environment, polls show--until they're forced to make a trade-off. That's why, for some companies, "green" marketing is more of a signaling strategy than anything else. Consider widespread plastic straw bans.
