More tightly spun yarns tend to pill less. Our hand knit sweaters are precious so we tend to take good care of them which may account for some of their lasting ability. The socks I knit my hubby for Christmas now have great big holes in them… acrylic… ugh! They are also being knit on smaller needles than the yarn calls for… making them very bulky indeed.
